Another Successful Urban Health Summer Institute

July 5, 2022

The seventh annual Drexel Urban Health Summer Institute held on June 24 – July 1, 2022, brought together over 65 attendees from across the country. This was the first year that the Summer Institute offered participation through remote, hybrid, and in person course formats. Attendees had the opportunity to gain skills in data analysis tools and methods for urban health research and community engagement. Since the inception of the Summer Institute in 2016, the Urban Health Collaborative has trained more than 460 participants through this program.

2022 courses included:

  • GIS Spatial Analysis for Urban Health
  • Introduction to Multilevel Analysis for Urban Health Research
  • Introduction to Community Based System Dynamics
  • Community Based Participatory Research for Urban Neighborhoods
  • Introduction to GIS
  • Introduction to Bayesian Analysis for Urban Health

Professionals from across Philadelphia and the U.S. participated, from organizations like the Philadelphia Department of Public Health, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Over 20 students and staff from Dornsife School of Public Health attended. Several other universities were also represented, including Yale University, University of Cambridge, University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, and many others.

“The Urban Health Summer Institute is such a great opportunity to build a specific skillset or a specific knowledge base in such a short amount of time,” Félice Lê-Scherban, PhD, MPH, training core lead at the UHC, mentioned when asked about the importance of the Urban Health Summer Institute. She went on to say that it is also a chance to come together and connect with people from all over the world around a shared principle about how the places we live affect our health.
